Spic And Span Floors With A Robot Vacuum Cleaner!

Wednesday, January 7th, 2009

by Ned Dagostino

Straight out of a Richie Rich comic book comes Irona, the robot maid! This time she’s here to help you do the floors. Yes, you can pick up a robot floor vacuum cleaner for yourself and free yourself for other more meaningful, creative activities.

Man has exercised himself for centuries now thinking up ways and means of ridding himself of labor, manual as well as mental. A robot is a machine which does not require direct manual supervision to alter its behavior or activity according to situational dynamics. The floor robot vacuum cleaner is designed to clean the floors of the house unsupervised. Some models can be activated remotely over the Internet or by the cell phone system.

Sophisticated logic circuits scan the floor to determine the amount of dirt there, and compute the number of passes required to clean the area. The robot then moves ahead and repeats the scan. In this way the whole area designated for cleaning is covered. No more getting down on your hands and knees to clean under the bed or the couch – the robot is designed to clean all those hard to reach places.

The robot is programmed to navigate around objects, or to turn back when it reaches the end of the room. How it does so depends on the model you buy. Sophisticated but expensive models detect boundary conditions using non-contact techniques like infrared or ultrasonic. Cheaper models stop only after colliding into the obstacle. This can damage the robot as well as the furniture and the walls, so you’re well advised to get a model with rubber bumpers.

The floor-cleaning robots do an almost perfect job of cleaning the floor, leaving it spick and span. They generally do suffer from an inability to clean really tight areas, especially at the edges of wall and floor boundaries, and the corners of the room. Those areas will have to be handled manually for the present.

Manual cleaning is still required for staircases and steps. The robots also have a strange appetite for the loose fringes at the edge of rugs and carpets! This causes the robots to stall, and you have to run to their rescue. All these are run-of-the-mill problems which are currently being addressed by the designers of these sophisticated robots.

The robot floor vacuum cleaners work well on all floors. They don’t baulk at a little liquid on the floor. They are great at picking up hair, lint, small pieces of paper and cloth just like a regular vacuum cleaner.

The robot vacuum cleaner can move freely around the room because it does not need to be tethered to a power receptacle. It carries its own rechargeable battery. Some models return to a base station and get recharged all by themselves. The price of the robot depends on the features that are provided in that particular model. The low-end models are quite affordable. The price of the high-end models is quite steep, obviously.

The robot floor cleaner takes the place of a domestic help. You can do other more important things while the floor is getting done by the robot. This saves your time. More than that, you’ll appreciate the freedom from that dead-boring, mentally stultifying chore which is as brain-numbing as they come! Cooking is creative and positive, the dishwasher and the washing machine don’t require you on site all the time; it’s just the vacuuming that requires you to be there every second! Yes, if you think that ‘saving time’ means that the robot can clean the house quicker than you can, you’re mistaken, badly! It takes at least twice as long as a manual vacuuming operation.

Ah yes, there’s also the small matter of emptying the robot floor cleaner which is still your responsibility. But this is just a minor irritant compared to the advantages of having a robot do your vacuuming for you. Not only does it save you your time, it releases you from that feeling of drudgery that is part and parcel of doing the same old job, day in and day out.

The Benefits of Dehumidifiers

Thursday, January 1st, 2009

by Patrick Anthony

If you live somewhere where the climate tends to be either wet or humid then it is worth considering getting a dehumidifier for your home. Certainly over time the high content of water found in humid air can actually cause damage to your home and what you have inside. However, by installing a dehumidifier can help to prevent such problems in the future.

As well as excess water causing damage to your home it can lead to health issues for those that live in it. What you may not realize is that this water has led to the growth of mold on the walls and which can cause you respiratory problems in the future. In this article we will take a look at what some of the benefits of having a dehumidifier in your home are.

Benefit 1 – It is a great way of helping to control the growth of dust mites in the home. You cannot actually see these are they are so minute but the droppings that they leave behind can cause you real problems. Many people suffer allergic reactions to the droppings that these leave behind in your home. Plus if you or a family member is asthmatic it can actually exacerbate the condition.

However if you get a dehumidifier then you can help to reduce the amount of dust mites in your home. Doing this you are actually reducing the amount of airborne allergens you and your family breath in and which can make conditions we mentioned above much worse.

Benefit 2 – For anyone who suffers from rheumatism or arthritis additional moisture in the air can aggravate their symptoms further. Certainly you will find that over time the pain you feel will become far less and you may find that you are able to move around a lot more freely than before having a dehumidifier in your home.

Benefit 3 – Along with a dehumidifier being beneficial to one’s health it can help you to save money as well. You may not realize it the more moisture in the atmosphere in your home the more heat it absorbs. So what you will generally find is that you end up turning up the thermostat to ensure that you keep warm. However, by having a dehumidifier in your home you are drying out the air which allows the heat to be retained in the room. So you end up keeping the temperature on your thermostat down which means that far less energy is being used to power it.

If you want to lead a much healthier and happier life and wish to avoid suffering some of the problems mentioned above it is worth considering getting a dehumidifier. Certainly in a very short space of time you yourself will see what the benefits of dehumidifiers can have on your home and your health and that of your family.

Facts About the Breville 800ESXL Espresso Maker

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008
by Valerie T.

The Breville 800ESXL espresso maker is a joy to behold. Fortunately, it is not all looks and no brains. The Breville 800ESXL Die Cast offers a dozen innovative features to make your espresso-making experience a delight, rather than a chore. And the taste results won’t disappoint, either.

Weighing in at 31 lbs (19 kg), it’s on the heavy side of the scales as home espresso makers go. That weight doesn’t guarantee a good shot, naturally. But the extra stability provides a welcome convenience. You’ll spend no time cleaning up spills. With its stainless steel exterior, cleanup there is equally easy.

The interior parts are equally high quality. They feature a chrome-plated brass filter, which provides even thermal conductivity, and therefore excellent temperature control. Some reviewers give less than stellar marks due to the thermoblock heating component. But even the most expensive units use it, so it can hardly be considered a cheap substitute. It’s doubtful whether anyone could tell the difference in a blind taste test.

There is one area where the machine is less than ideal. Because of its dual-wall design (which has advantages for pressure and temperature control), the 800ESXL produces grounds that are sludgy. Most espresso lovers with experience of several machines will be used to a drier, more compact puck that simply flops out of the machine during cleanup. In this reviewer’s opinion, the defect is minor.

The 800ESXL more than makes up for any flaws by added convenience, not to mention making an excellent shot of espresso.

It offers a well designed steam wand set on a ball. That makes it easy to turn in any direction. That’s a big help when you’ve got different sized cups to fill. The wand also provides straight hot water for making hot cocoa, tea… any hot drink!

The maker does a superb job of keeping water at precisely the right temperature throughout the machine for a stellar shot. Cheaper espresso makers have hot and cold spots, producing inconsistent and inferior results. As the water and/or coffee passes through the machine it is affected slightly by these differences.

It’s true that the thermoblock is not quite as consistent in terms of pressure and temperature as a commercial-quality brass boiler. But in actual tests the difference was virtually undetectable and the lower price makes it a toss up.

There’s a large heating tray, which simply adds to the quality. Keeping your espresso cup warm is just one more element among many for producing the best possible final result.

The removable water tank is large enough for 50 shots before needing to be refilled. That’s a nice feature, especially for large parties. But then the Breville Die Cast 800ESXL espresso maker is just full of nice features.

Convenience, style, and capable of an excellent shot of espresso. What’s not to like?
